Dental Insurance Covered by Medicare

According to the National Association of Dental Plans, 80% of Americans have access to dental benefits; however, nearly 35% of American adults did not visit a dentist in 2019. Hefty insurance premiums and confusing government benefits are at the core of the issue that keeps Americans away from the dentist’s chair.

Medicare dental coverage is available through Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid, private plans (including employer-sponsored retiree plans), or individually purchased plans. Yet, almost half (47%) of Medicare users do not currently have dental coverage.

Some Medicare Advantage plans provide supplemental benefits typically not covered under traditional Medicare, including dental benefits. Most of these enrollees have access to coverage for preventative dental services, such as oral exams, x-rays, and cleanings. About half of the Medicare Advantage participants have the option to have their fluoride treatments covered by their dental plan. The more extensive benefits plans cover restorative services, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery.

Those who have health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) might have access to dental care as part of their medical plan. Alternately, they may choose to purchase separate stand-alone dental coverage. Fortunately, the majority of these plans have little to no cost-sharing for preventative services.

Our legislature is currently looking to reform health care, considering the growing dental costs facing Americans. Additionally, lack of oral health care can exacerbate chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and contribute to other severe medical conditions and complications.
