Should I Get Veneers or Braces?

If you are dreaming of the perfect smile, plenty of cosmetic dentistry options exist to help you straighten your teeth. Two popular options are veneers and braces. While they are very different treatments, they both leave you with fantastic results and a healthy smile.

But there is a difference between veneers and braces and your dental history, and the root of your issue will help determine which is best for you. Let’s look at the difference between veneers and braces to help you make the best decision for your unique smile.

What are Braces?

Braces are orthodontic appliances that help correct misalignments of teeth, bite abnormalities, and other dental issues that stem from jaw misalignment. The most traditional type of brace includes brackets attached to the front of teeth. Then, stainless steel bands attach to these brackets with cement, archwires for guiding tooth movement, and small elastic rubber bands between the brackets on either side.

Advantages of Braces

  • Non-Invasive

  • Correct alignment issues in the whole body

  • Temporary

  • Less expensive than veneers

Disadvantages of Braces

  • Duration of time to the improvement

  • Continued use of orthodontic appliances for life

What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-like material designed to cover the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. Typically made from a porcelain or resin material, veneers are designed to look identical to a healthy natural tooth. Veneers are routinely used to fix dental problems like discolored, chipped, or broken teeth due to root canal treatment or excessive fluoride use.

Advantages of Veneers

  • Shorter time frame

  • Less intense process

  • Improve the shape and color of teeth

Disadvantages of Veneers

  • Irreversible

  • More expensive

Braces or Veneers?

As you can see, there are several things to consider when deciding if braces are the best way to improve your smile. If you have healthy teeth that are simply misaligned, the root of the problem is in your jaw, and proper treatment needs to happen through orthodontics or braces. However, if you want to cover issues such as chipped teeth or stains, veneers could be the perfect solution for you!
